Precision Engineering, True Lead Manufacturing

From first concept to finished, certified component Royston Lead manages the complete engineering lifecycle.

For over 100 years, Royston Lead has been engineering with one of the most demanding materials. Lead’s density, malleability and resistance to corrosion make it indispensable to sectors where failure is not an option, be that: nuclear, defence, marine, radiation shielding and metals processing among them. What sets us apart is not simply the ability to supply lead. It is the ability to take a customer from an early design challenge, through material selection and manufacture, to a finished, traceable component and to keep that component performing, or responsibly recover it, long after installation.

Royston offers a turnkey capability, backed by in-house design, casting, rolling and machining, supported by a repair and refurbishment service, and closed by a genuine cradle-to-cradle recovery offer for waste lead. Few, if any, suppliers in our sector can offer every one of these stages under one roof.

One Partner, Every Stage: Design Through to Manufacture

Every project starts with a conversation about the problem you are trying to solve. Our in-house design and engineering team works alongside customers from the concept stage, translating performance requirements, shielding density, load, tolerance, environment into a manufacturable specification.

From there, the same team that designed the solution manufactures it. We do not hand a design off to a third-party foundry. Casting, rolling, machining and finishing are covered by our quality systems, which means:

  • A single point of accountability from drawing to delivery, with no gaps for miscommunication between designer and manufacturer.
  • Full material traceability, from the alloy melt through to the finished, inspected component essential for nuclear, defence and safety-critical applications.
  • Faster iteration, because design changes can be tested against real manufacturing constraints on site,
  • Consistent quality control at every stage, under our accredited quality management systems.

Manufacturing Capabilities

Cast and Rolled Lead

Our factory casts lead and lead alloys to precise chemical specification, producing billets, ingots and cast components to order. Cast shapes, slabs and billets feed directly into our finishing operations or through a secondary extrusion or rolling operation, before being finally finished.

Downstream Machining and Fabrication

Extruded, cast and rolled lead is only the starting point. Our downstream capabilities turn the material into finished, dimensionally accurate components:

  • CNC machining for complex geometries and tight tolerances.
  • Milling and turning of cast and rolled lead and lead alloys.
  • Precision cutting and routing to produce panels, blanks and profiles to exact drawing specification.
  • Fabrication and assembly of composite lead and steel structures, where lead is required to line, fill or shield a supporting structure.

Repair and Refurbishment

Lead components. shielding structures, ballast, process lining represents a significant capital investment, and replacement is not always the most practical or cost-effective option. Royston provides repair and refurbishment services that extend the working life of existing lead assets, using the same in-house design, casting and machining capabilities behind every new build. Where a component can be assessed, refurbished and returned to service, we will recommend that route ahead of a costly full replacement.

Cradle to Cradle: A Genuine Closed-Loop Service

Environmental responsibility is built into how we manufacture. Wherever possible we work to a genuine cradle-to-cradle model: material is sourced responsibly, manufactured efficiently, and critically can be recovered and returned to the material cycle at the end of its working life, rather than sent to landfill.

As part of the IMI Group, Royston Lead has access to a full recycling service for lead products, together with specialist metallurgical expertise. In practice, this means we can offer customers a genuine end-of-life recovery service:

This closes the circle: design, manufacture, machining, repair, and when a component finally reaches end of life, recovery. All provided by the same organisation.
